Miami Dog Training –

Bringing home a puppy can be an exciting experience. Now that you have a new member of the family, it is important to create clear rules for your puppy as well as start to build a strong and loyal relationship.

There are a few important points to think of before and upon your puppy’s arrival:

Puppy Proofing your Home:

It is important to ensure the room which your puppy will spend time in is safe. Get rid or hide any hazards such as short trashcans, wires, small objects and chemicals which can be ingested. Wall outlets should be covered by plastic covers.

Create a safe spot for your pup:

Choose a designated spot in the house or apartment where your puppy can sleep at night and take naps during the day. This area should be small, yet comfortable and secure to prevent your puppy from wandering around the house freely. A crate or playpen is best.

If you chose a crate, it is best to get a larger one that comes with a divider. Your puppy will develop and grow quickly in the first 6 months and you will want a crate that they can fit in. If it is too large, the puppy may potty in the crate, so the divider will help make the inside small enough where the puppy can use it as their sleeping quarters. Make sure they have enough room in their crate to stand up, turn, and lay down comfortably.

House Breaking:

Potty training your puppy will take time, patience and consistency. Puppy bladders are weak when they are young, but will strengthen over time. It is important to take your puppy to the correct potty spot often. It is normal for accidents to occur once in awhile; it is all part of the learning process. Make sure to reward your puppy when they go to the bathroom in the right spot.

Starting training with your puppy at a young age will prevent problem behaviors from arising. Basic obedience skills will teach your dog important manners and skills to become a well-behaved and loyal companion. Training also allows dogs to be physically stimulated. Fun training games helps expel some energy in a positive and productive way. If your dog tires out from all of the fun, there is less worry of them displaying naughty habits such as chewing on furniture or digging in the trash.
